Baja Glassblowing  Factory

Glassblowing, like most crafts, is universal. The language of the craftsman or the form of their work may differ but the tools and the process are the same. I arrived to San Jose del Cabo, MX on the National Geographic Sea Bird (my employer and home) and was able to escape from work for a few hours to explore the town. After a great cup of coffee and conversation with interesting people, this kind of normal activity is cherished when working on a ship, I wondered to the glassblowing factory. I skipped the demonstration, I have seen glassblowing many times, its the equipment and raw materials that interest me. In spanish I spoke with the artist and his apprentice about their process and kilns, telling them that I am a potter and love kilns. I learned that all the glass they used is from clear recycled bottles from local hotels and restaurants. Once the bottles are cleaned of all contaminants it only takes a few hours to melt them, at 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Colorant is added in the form of oxides, the most popular of course is the cobalt blue. The glass is all blown in the studio and cooled in two separate kilns. The artists produce an immense amount of work out of this small work space, but the real draw is to see craftsmen at work creating beautiful art. And I am so happy that people have this interest, it gives me hope for my future as a crafts person and artist.
