Soda Firing is an alternative way of firing pottery that creates depth in glazes and a glossy surface on bare clay. To get these affects of clay a mixture of soda ash, which is similar to baking soda, and water is sprayed in the kiln towards the end of the firing. This mixture is vaporized and carried throughout the kiln by the gas flame that is heating the kiln. The soda lands on the pots and melts, creating unique surface designs and textures.
